Our Treatment Approach

A Treatment Approach Unique to Your Child

Your child’s team of physicians and specialists will be created to suit their individualized care needs. Designing this personalized plan is important to us because we believe that your child deserves a care plan as unique and special as they are.

What You Can Expect

Before Your Visit

Prior to your initial visit, you will be asked to provide us with your child’s medical records and any insurance information. For details on what is required, please visit our Patient Information page.

During Your Visit

You’ll typically begin with a visit to our clinic. Here, we will evaluate your child and work with you to design a customized treatment plan.

After Your Visit

Following the clinical evaluation and care plan development, you and your child will be introduced to their individualized team of specialists. Depending on the plan, your team may include social workers, registered nurses, child life specialists, dieticians, occupational therapists, physical therapists and certified orthotists and prosthetists. Procedures or follow-up appointments will be booked with members from your child’s team of specialists according to their care plan.

Our Commitment to You

We are committed to ensuring your child thrives at home, school and in their community. This includes providing your family with the highest quality of care, access to our in-house clinical services, traditional inpatient services and any other professional support services related to your child’s treatment plan.

Pediatric Specialty Care at Shriners Children's Portland

Shriners Children’s Portland offers specialized care for a wide range of pediatric orthopedic conditions, including rare diseases and syndromes. Members of our orthopedic department are associated with a number of prestigious global organizations focused on excellence in pediatric orthopedics. Other specialties available at our facility include fracture and sports injury treatment, scoliosis & spine care and cleft lip and palate care.

Cleft Lip and Palate Care

Cleft lip and/or cleft palate occurs in approximately one out of every 700 births. This condition is a result of the tissue in your child's lip and/or mouth not fully forming during pregnancy.

If your child has a cleft lip and/or cleft palate, we offer specialized treatment and surgical repair which can help prevent problems associated with their condition(s). These treatments can help regulate your child's breathing, speaking, and eating abilities, and enhance the reconstruction of their facial tissue for an improved cosmetic appearance.

Fracture Care and Sports Injuries

If your child has experienced a fracture or sports-related injury, our team of specialists is available to provide X-rays, casting, surgery, follow-up assessments and rehabilitation.

Fracture care is provided on a walk-in basis, offering a convenient and reliable solution for families. The clinic is open Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m.–4 p.m., where our outpatient team provides high-quality specialty care.

Please note that our medical center does not offer emergency room or urgent care services for open fractures or injuries that are life or limb-threatening.

Orthopedic Care

Our orthopedic department includes world-renowned specialists in pediatric orthopedics, including physicians, surgeons and acclaimed clinical researchers.

If your child has an orthopedic condition, Shriners Children's Portland is an exceptional facility to consider for their treatment. Our highly-qualified staff will work with you to develop a plan that covers all aspects of their care. Depending on the complexity of your child's condition, their care plan can include a variety of treatments, surgery, rehabilitation and psychological support.

Scoliosis and Spine Care

Because of our team's expertise in orthopedics, we are equipped to provide treatment for more complex conditions including a variety of spinal conditions and scoliosis. Our treatment approach for these conditions will vary depending on the cause and severity of the disorder.

If your child has scoliosis or a spine condition, we will perform a comprehensive assessment, then work with you to develop a plan that covers all aspects of their care. Treatment for spine conditions can vary, so your child's care plan may include surgery, rehabilitation, bracing or casting, psychological support or other forms of specialized care.

Pediatric Orthotic and Prosthetic Services

The Pediatric Orthotic and Prosthetic Services (POPS) team is devoted to designing braces, prosthetic arms and legs, and adaptive devices that give children the ability to pursue their dreams.

When you and your child visit our POPS team, it is more than measurements and mechanics. It is about your child sharing their hopes and dreams and providing our team with information specific to them. These personalized details about your child's activities and lifestyle allow our technicians to return to the lab and design a perfect fit just for them.
