Rita Foglio:

We would take our granddaughter to church on Sundays and someone noticed she had a slight limp and they suggested it would benefit Lauren if she came to Shriners in Greenville. From the minute she entered the door at Shriners, it relieved some of that anxiety. Her physical therapy was amazing. They took care of everything.

We always tended to volunteer, but we were now giving financially to Shriners, going through a charitable gift annuity. It was easy for us to understand, had the ability to defer taxes. You could choose to have a dividend, so you would actually have some income coming in quarterly. I just thought it simplified the process of giving. I can direct our giving to certain departments so it's more personalized.

Domenick Foglio:

It is the most rewarding thing that I ever could do. And I think anyone would feel the same way. It's priceless.

Rita Foglio:

I can see my money working in real time, makes it all worthwhile.

Terry:

You have to find where you want your money to go and send it in that direction.

Elwin:

We've been very, very fortunate over these 60 years. We have worked hard, but we have done it all on our own. We haven't inherited anything. And as our net worth increased a little bit, we were talking to our stockbroker and we kept saying, "Well, we were going to give to the Shrine Hospital upon our death."

And he pointed out that it might be a good idea to consider making some gifts along the way. So, that's what really triggered the idea. And then being an accountant and looking into it, we saw the real benefits that we could glean from that.

So if we give $10,000 to the Shrine Hospital, we get a 50% credit against our income tax, and we get 8% return. 70% of that is tax-free. So that allows us to help the Shrine Hospital. And in the meantime, it gives us income.

Terry:

Our grandniece would've had to have surgery after surgery after surgery. And because what Shriners had developed, she didn't have to go through that.

Elwin:

That's very gratifying when you can see that you're helping somebody and you're helping the family indirectly.

Terry:

The Shrine hospitals are so caring in the way they treat the children.

Elwin:

I don't think you can put a value on it. They're just so special.

It was the day he was born, the moment he was born, actually. They did x-rays and they told us he was missing his fibular bone.

Eventually we made it here to Shriners and that's when everything changed. That was like the light.

What they've done for Arlo is it's a debt I can't repay. It's something that I couldn't give my son. The Shriners was able to help us.

I can see how scared I was with the first leg he had to how certain I am with the ones he has now.

Milli:

Filled with opportunities.

Milli:

I'm Milli and I'm here as a patient at Shriners Children's. I started coming here about 10 months ago when my accident happened. So it was a little tabletop cooker thing and you just pour a little bit of rubbing alcohol into it and you light it and there's just a little flame. But sometimes rubbing alcohol makes invisible flames and that's exactly what happened and it just shots flames straight at me. I just remember I closed my eyes and I just stood there in shock, like, "What is happening?" I really did think I was going to die because I've never been in that situation and I've never really thought about catching on fire. So it was very scary. To me, my dad is a very strong person and he doesn't like to show emotions around me because he wants to be that strong person in my life. But I'm sure he was very upset and scared for my wellbeing and Shriners Children's, they were able to talk to him, staff were able to talk to him and explain to him that everything's going to be okay.

And he's my support, but Shriners Children's is his support. When I come here, I feel, oh goodness, I feel a lot of things. I feel very grateful that I have just so many amazing people here, the staff and even the patients. Everyone here is just so kind. I get overwhelmed with happiness when I'm here. It's crazy. Most people are like, "No, why would I want to go to the hospital?" But I like it here. I would stay. [inaudible 00:02:01] has really talked to me about confidence, so that's really helped a lot with just how I view myself. And they've helped me with the surgeries. It's helped a lot with being able to move even and just looking a lot better. A lot of people don't even notice it when they first see me.

At first, it felt like my quality of life was not as good. It felt like it was altered, but I see now that it's more of an opportunity that I've learned so much here about myself and about my confidence, my self-worth. So I feel like my quality of life has even gotten better in a way. I have something different about me than everyone else. A lot of people see me as beautiful with my burns because it's just something that not everybody has. Coming here, it makes me understand that even with, without my burns, I'm beautiful and I have an amazing personality. And I'm starting to realize that about my self-worth is that I'm a good person. It makes me feel a lot better just being here around this good support system. I want future Milli to know that I'm proud of her because I mean, it took a lot to recover physically and emotionally from the trauma, from the entire thing and future Milli needs to know that she did an amazing job.
