Rohit Mittal, M.D., is a burn surgeon and medical director of the Pediatric Burn Center at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital in Charleston, home to South Carolina's only comprehensive pediatric burn center. He holds the Shriners Children's Endowed Professorship in Pediatric Burn Care, created through the affiliation between Shriners Children's and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), where he is associate professor of surgery and directs the Burn Surgery Fellowship.
Dr. Mittal earned his undergraduate and medical degrees at Emory University, where he also completed a general surgery residency and two years of research in sepsis and critical care immunology. He then completed fellowships in burn surgery and critical care and in burn reconstructive surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch and Shriners Children's Texas in Galveston. He is board certified in general surgery and surgical critical care and is a Fellow of the American Burn Association. Before joining MUSC in 2022, he directed the Burn Reconstruction Program at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
Dr. Mittal cares for children from the day of injury through recovery and long-term scar reconstruction, with particular expertise in laser treatment of burn scars, reconstructive surgery, burn critical care and wound healing. His research aims to improve outcomes after burn injury, including burn resuscitation, laser scar care and AI-assisted burn assessment. He is committed to burn prevention and education and serves on the board of the South Carolina Burned Children's Fund, which supports a summer camp for young burn survivors.
