Bennett has never met a stranger.
This sociable kindergartener from South Carolina is quick to tell you all about his favorite things: Spider-Man, football, dinosaurs, his pet lizard and waffles. He loves making people laugh, and he strikes up conversations with just about anyone he meets. That outgoing personality has become a hallmark of a child whose resilience continues to inspire everyone around him.
Bennett was just 3 years old when a tragic incident left him with burn injuries covering approximately 90% of his body. Since then, he has undergone a long and intensive recovery journey that has included surgeries and ongoing therapy. Bennett’s initial treatment took place in Georgia, and after his original doctor was no longer available, his family transferred his care to Shriners Children's Texas, where he now receives specialized reconstructive and rehabilitative burn care.
The transition brought understandable uncertainty because Bennett and his family had spent significant time with a medical team they knew and trusted. Starting over with new providers felt a little intimidating at first. It didn't take long, however, for Shriners Children's Texas to feel like home. From the physicians and therapists to the nursing staff and support teams, Bennett and his mother, Chelsea, quickly built connections throughout the hospital. Chelsea said one of the biggest differences has been the relationships formed along the way.
"Everybody knows him," Chelsea said. "Everywhere we go, people know Bennett."
