Shriners Children's Philadelphia Medical Research Immersion Program

Shriners Children’s Philadelphia proudly invites high school juniors, seniors and college students to participate in the Clinical Research Summer Immersion Program. This five-day intense research program will train 20 high school and college students on clinical research principles. The program will equip participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to understand the clinical research process, explore current trends, and generate innovative research ideas. At the end of the program, participants will present a research idea, demonstrating their understanding and potential contribution to the field of clinical research.

“This program is an initiative that not only aligns with but actively supports and enhances Shriners Children’s mission to changing and improving lives through education, research, and compassionate care to create a brighter future for children's health care,” said Amer Samdani, M.D., chief of surgery.

Many high school and college students may not have an opportunity to be exposed to clinical research principles during their education. Engaging these students in research fosters community ties and cultivates the next generation of pediatric healthcare innovators. We are proud to grow this program and welcome students to the hospital to further their extracurricular education.

“I think it can be hard to get experience or exposure to careers in the medical field in high school or undergrad. This program will give kids experience in asking for letters of recommendation and interviewing while also exposing them to medical professionals where they can build professional connections,” said Emily Nice, BS, clinical research coordinator.

High school and college students who are interested will be required to submit a brief application that includes their academic background, reasons for wanting to participate in the workshop, a description of their career goals, and one reference letter. A selection committee will review the applications and choose up to 20 participants based on merit, potential for future clinical research involvement, and diversity of academic backgrounds. The deadline to apply is March 15. Selected applicants will be invited to interview virtually.
