Patient Programs

Our Care Goes Beyond

At Shriners Children's Boston, our team is committed to caring for the overall health and well-being of our patients. This includes their minds as well as their bodies. In that spirit, we offer a wide variety of programs and support services.

Our extensive patient programs give children the opportunity to participate in enjoyable activities to brighten their stay.

Shriners Children's also partners with a number of community organizations to provide opportunities for children to explore and grow their overall potential inside and outside of the hospital. Your nurse or care coordinator can direct you to opportunities in the community.

Camps

Arthur C. Luf Children's Burn Camp

Burn injuries change your life, and it can help children accept their injuries and embrace life to meet other people who have experienced similar burn injuries. The Arthur C. Luf Children’s Burn Camp, offered by the Connecticut Burns Care Foundation, provides an accepting and safe environment for children 8 to 18 to enjoy a traditional outdoor camp experience among children just like them.

Programs

Fezzy Goes to School

Missing school can be particularly hard for children who have to stay at our facility – and it can be hard for the children back at school as well. They often miss the child who's gone and have lots of questions. Fezzy Bear is sent to a child's school to stay in their classroom while they're gone. Classmates and the patient are able to send each other letters through Fezzy Bear, giving everyone something to look forward to.

Make-up Clinic

Our corrective Make-up Clinic occurs weekly at our Shriners Children's Boston facility. Experienced make-up artist Robin Liebowitz, who is certified in reconstructive and corrective make-up, teaches both male and female patients how to conceal scars and use make-up to enhance natural beauty by softening the appearance of facial and body scarring, balancing facial features and choosing the right colors. The clinic helps promote self-confidence and is often the final touch patients need to heal.

Music Therapy

Music isn't just fun to listen to. It also offers physical and mental benefits as well, such as improving respiration, lowering stress and developing coping skills. Sessions are tailored to each child's needs and include songwriting, individual performances and one-on-one sessions and are conducted at our facility twice a week. Learn more about our Music Therapy Program or email Rebecca Wildes for more information.

Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC)

PFAC was established to foster successful collaboration among patients, families and staff so we can provide innovative, compassionate care. Parents and families coordinate with staff to identify opportunities for enhancements, brainstorm solutions, and implement changes to improve the patient and family experience. Call 617-371-4785 or email for more information.

Pet Therapy

Dogs, cats and rabbits registered as Shriners Children’s pet therapy volunteers provide comfort and affection. Contact Child Life to see if there are furry friends in the lobby of our hospital today ready to pay a visit. Learn more about our Pet Therapy Program.

School Re-entry Program

A child might return to school with scars, a prosthetic arm or leg, or a wheelchair, but they’re still the same inside. Our School Re-entry Program educates teachers, classmates and other individuals about the child’s injury or condition and how they can support the child in their transition back to school. For more information please email Rebecca Wildes.

Survivors Offering Assistance in Recovery (SOAR)

This national program offered in partnership with the Phoenix Society provides support to burn survivors and their families by connecting them with other people who have experienced similar injuries. Virtual and in-house visits are possible at this time. For more information, email Liza Gamelli or Katie Maggi.

Team Brave Community Reintegration Program

Everyone loves a field trip! Patients with burn injuries join other Team Brave members on outings such as museums, sporting events, cooking and art classes, yoga and rock climbing. The trips help medically cleared patients build confidence as they heal and are chosen with the physical, psychological and social needs of patients in mind. Team Brave is a partnership between Shriners Children's Boston and the Boston Firefighters Burn Foundation (BFFBF). Email Rebecca Wildes for more information.

Team Impact

Team Impact is a therapeutic program that pairs children with local collegiate sports teams. Children visit participating collegiate athletic facilities where they meet with athletes to practice team skills and build confidence. Email Brooke Allen for more information.

Therapeutic Riding Program

Horses are majestic animals that help children build confidence and trust because of their sensitive and responsive nature. Learn more about our Therapeutic Riding Program, which offers children an opportunity to engage in equine-assisted activities and therapies. Email Rebecca Wildes for more information.
