Ahmad Bayomy, M.D.'s youngest brother was born with a brittle bone condition that resulted in numerous fractures throughout childhood. Dr. Bayomy was too young to fully appreciate the scope of the orthopedic care that his brother was receiving, but he knew that he wanted to help other people facing similar challenges. In college, he also realized that orthopedics could marry his interests in engineering, biology and humanitarian work. He solidified his plans in medical school where he was able to participate in the rigor and fulfillment of orthopedic surgery. His brother remains a tremendous inspiration.

Now, Dr. Bayomy focuses on pediatric orthopedics and sports medicine, so his patients are often young people who have pain or dysfunction related to an injury that occurred gradually or suddenly. In approaching their care, Dr. Bayomy takes many things into consideration: the patient's goals, the family's needs, the impact that any intervention may have on normal processes (e.g., leg growth), the scientific evidence for treatment success, and the logistics of the rehabilitation process among others. He enjoys developing a care plan with each family and the interdisciplinary team at Shriners Children's that seeks to optimize these factors. Dr. Bayomy also likes to collaborate with his orthopedic colleagues and mentors to find the best care plans for patients, continuing to learn from their insights.

Dr. Bayomy says it is a wonderful thing to see a child or adolescent feel better, return to a favorite activity, have a straighter limb, or somehow come away improved after he has been a part of their care. He feels it is a great honor to be able to care for patients through challenging times, and those interactions make it all worthwhile.
