Andrea Allen, M.D., MA, was raised in Kansas City and attended the University of Kansas for her undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree. She then moved to Boston where she received a Master of Arts in medical science from Boston University School of Medicine. She returned home and went to medical school at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She completed her integrated plastic surgery residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) where she spent six months of her training taking care of patients at Shriners Children’s Texas. She took on the extra role of mother, when she had two kids during residency. Following graduation, she elected to stay at UTMB as a faculty member of the plastic and reconstructive surgery division. Her practice divides her time between Shriners Children’s Texas and UTMB, and she is very happy to continue to care for Shriners Children’s patients.

Dr. Allen is very inspired by mentorship and education. She frequently mentored medical students during residency and was nominated for resident of the year during her final year of training. She is now the associate program director and has a passion for quality improvement for UTMB and Shriners Children’s, ensuring that patients receive the best care.

She loves taking care of the pediatric population, because children are like magic. They are so adaptable, and their ability to evolve after surgery is moving. Dr. Allen is inspired by the mission of Shriners Children’s and really appreciates being included in the journey of recovery for kids who have been burned. Their resilience is so special, and Shriners Children’s Texas has unbelievable resources to help improve these children’s quality of life and carry them into adulthood.

She is a member of the American Council of Educators in Plastic Surgery, Texas Society of Plastic Surgeons, and Houston Society of Plastic Surgeons. She is board eligible and currently pursuing board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

When Dr. Allen is not working, she is busy with her husband and two children. Some of their favorite activities are riding bikes, walking their two dogs, and visiting different museums! Dr. Allen also enjoys crafting, including gem painting and cross-stitching, as well as puzzles and board games.
