Scott H. Kozin, M.D., Chief Medical Officer:

My name is Scott Kozin. I am currently the chief medical officer for Shriners Children's. I started in Shriners way back when, in the year 2000. I was a hand surgeon for, give or take 30 years. I love the impact that hand surgery has on the way that children function and the way they appear and the way they interact with other children and the way they grow through the years and use their hands to become adults. For me, giving up caring for kids, seeing them in the office, operating them, interacting with their parents, it was a big decision. This job could have more of an impact on a global stage, though I can truly influence the way that Shriners Children's takes care of kids. Becoming chief medical officer, it's a huge opportunity as a leader. We're only as good a leader as the people that report to us.

I just happen to be the chief medical officer, but I rely upon all those individuals and all those therapists and all those nurses and all those frontline people to make a difference and to care for those kids like they were one of their own kids. The medical group has been the biggest advance in terms of the care that we provide via the physicians. Our tripartite mission is like a three-legged stool. We take care of patients one leg. We provide education with just second leg, and then we perform research, which is the third leg. And we expect our physicians to perform all three legs on that stool. That is very important for us to maintain our quality and make sure that we are the best of the best. We're investing tremendous amount of monies, tremendous amount of resources into this new research institute, which will allow us to bring research from bench to bedside.

There is nothing more gratifying than a parent entrusting you with the care for the kids, you providing that care in an exceptional way, and then everyone benefits. When patients and their families come into the Shriners Children's family, they'll experience that care that we provide and they'll feel our compassion.
