Motion Analysis Centers at Shriners Children's

For over 40 years, Shriners Children’s has been utilizing motion analysis technology, similar to what you might find in a Hollywood movie, in each of its 14 state-of-the-art motion analysis centers, making it the largest pediatric motion analysis center in the world. Motion analysis data is processed and analyzed to gain a greater understanding of the orthopedic and neuromuscular conditions we treat.

Ross Chafetz, Corporate Director of Motion Analysis Cypress:

Motion analysis is really cool. So what we do is we take Hollywood technology where they put markers and digitize how people move, and it really is true animation. Same company that makes our cameras, produces movies like Avatar or Iron Man or Star Wars. So we use that same Hollywood technology for healthcare, but rather than doing an action movie, what we're doing is analyzing how kids move and how can we use that to improve kids' lives.

Sean Waldron, Director of Motion Analysis, Sports Medicine:

Here at Shriners, we also utilize it for sports medicine. We put them through multiple different sports-specific motions, such as jumping, cutting, decelerating, accelerating things that they would normally do while playing sports and put them at high risk for injury. And we analyze if they're ready to play sports, if they're ready to return to sports after an injury, and what they can do to get their body ready to do those things.

Ross Chafetz:

Shriners is one of the few places where you can get motion analysis at all. Many hospitals don't provide the service. And then, to have one lab is really a blessing, but then to have 14 labs, there's nothing like that out there. And it's 14 labs that are now working together. When we see a patient, you get the expertise of nine PhDs, eight master-level engineers, and 26 PTs, because we're really considered one department as opposed to separate departments. So what we bring to the table is a real diversity in opinions and thoughts that solidify the best treatment for your child.
