The family initially received follow-up care close to home in Florida. Henley underwent numerous procedures and reconstruction efforts as doctors worked to treat her burn injuries. Yet as months passed, Alicyn grew increasingly concerned about her daughter's hand function.
"What is the next step?" she said. "Her hands are just not what they need to be."
Instead of getting the answers she hoped for, Alicyn felt like she had reached a dead end.
"I need somebody else," she remembers thinking.
The connection that ultimately led them to Shriners Children's came through family ties. Alicyn's stepfather is a Shriner, and the man who officiated her wedding to her husband is also a Shriner. Together, they helped start the process.
Pictures of Henley's injuries were sent for review, and within weeks, the family traveled halfway across the country for consultations at Shriners Children's Texas. Not long afterward, Henley underwent reconstructive surgery with Ludwik Branski, M.D.
The experience immediately felt different. Because Henley had been through so many procedures, Alicyn was looking for honesty and direct answers. During their first meetings with Dr. Branski, Alicyn came prepared with a simple but important question.
"I just said to him, 'Do you think you can fix it?'"
What stood out to Alicyn was not just Dr. Branski's expertise, but the way he approached Henley's care. He carefully evaluated her scars, discussed her recovery, and addressed questions that had been weighing on the family for years.
For Alicyn, the experience brought a sense of relief. She felt confident that Dr. Branski understood Henley’s challenges. With a focus on reconstruction and preserving mobility, the team helped the family see a path forward. Henley has undergone reconstructive procedures on both hands and returned to Shriners Children's Texas multiple times for additional care. The road has been long, but unlike those early days after the accident, Alicyn no longer feels like she's facing it alone.
"Henley has been through it, and she is so strong," Alicyn said.
Even so, Henley remains unmistakably herself. When she isn’t outside playing with her animals, Henley can be found swimming, fishing, playing with her dolls, and feeding her animals She remains active, bubbly and ready for her next adventure.
