A Spine Story: Charlie's Path to Less Pain

Today, Charlie makes his living telling stories.

His own story is one worth sharing, too.

Charlie's journey began in northwest Arkansas, where he always had a creative instinct – to observe, to build, to imagine something more. That's how he landed in Hollywood, working as an actor and director. He's a storyteller who's passionate about human connection.

One connection that reinforced that passion was the one he made at Shriners Children's St. Louis. In fact, that connection and the story that followed would shape his perspective in ways he never could have predicted.

Charlie was diagnosed with Scheuermann’s kyphosis, a condition that affects the spine’s curvature. The initial diagnosis, given in Arkansas, explained years of discomfort – but offered little hope.

On October 5, just two days before his 18th birthday, Charlie received life-changing news: he had been accepted for treatment at Shriners Children’s St. Louis. This was significant because the hospital system accepts new patients up to age 18. At the time, his mother, Cynthia, could barely wrap her mind around that perfect timing.

"The whole experience was a huge blessing. We are forever grateful," Cynthia said.

Being accepted marked the beginning of a fast-moving and transformative chapter – one that would lead to spinal fusion surgery on December 15, 2024. The time between his first appointment and surgery was just three months. Physicians were confident they could help. Charlie was determined to minimize his pain.

Charlie underwent an extensive spinal fusion procedure. Over eight hours, surgeons fused 12 vertebrae using 24 screws, spanning roughly 18 inches of his spine.

The results were immediate and life-changing.

“I grew nearly 4 inches in the eight hours it took them to perform that surgery,” Charlie said. “I woke up with a whole new perspective on the world.”

Within just a few days, he was standing again – taller and stronger. He'd begun the road to recovery.

Cynthia remembers supporting Charlie through hospital hallway walks and physical therapy after surgery. Even today, her gratitude overflows for the team who supported Charlie. "They were just the best team. Everyone had an awesome attitude, and they were so kind to us," she said.

Years later, Charlie still feels the lasting impact of his perfectly timed encounter with Shriners Children's St. Louis – not just physically, but in how he sees the world.

“I’m very grateful for what Shriners was able to give me,” he said. “It was unfathomable what they did to help me. I feel super blessed.”

As a storyteller, Charlie understands the power of perspective – that the most meaningful stories are often the ones we live through. His experience didn’t just change his life; it gave him a deeper understanding of resilience and hope.

And now, that story has become part of his purpose.

For Charlie, a new dream is emerging: to share his story with other families facing similar diagnoses – to offer reassurance through the uncertainty. For a natural-born storyteller, it’s a role that feels both meaningful and inevitable.
