Motion Analysis Center Uncovers Lainee's Chronic Pain

Through the expertise of her mom's coworkers, Lainee discovered the root cause of her knee pain.

After 18-year-old Lainee’s chronic knee pain didn’t improve with physical therapy, finding the right solution for care came close to home.

Her mom turned to her friends at Shriners Children’s Spokane, where she’s worked for over 18 years.

Outpatient clinic manager Missy brought her daughter to the motion analysis center to help discover what was causing enough pain to interfere with her life. Last year, Lainee, Missy and her care team shared her story with local news channel KXLY 4NewsNow during the Caring4Kids telethon.

“My kid won’t take my car to go shopping with her friends because it hurts to walk from the parking lot to the store,” said Missy. “I was like, okay, something is not right here.”

When Lainee was 8 years old, she first visited the motion analysis center to help test the room’s technology. Now, a decade later, she returned as a patient to uncover the underlying reason for her chronic pain.

Shriners Children’s Spokane’s motion analysis center is one of the only facilities of its kind in the Inland Northwest and is a helpful tool in finding a proper diagnosis. “If [a family’s] doctor is trying to find a diagnosis and they don’t know exactly what is going on, we can add another piece to their puzzle,” said Jenna Gerber, physical therapist at Shriners Children's Spokane.

Lainee’s study showed that her knees bent inwards and would require surgery to fix. After two successful surgeries to correct both knees, her chronic pain is a thing of the past.

I feel more correct. After the surgery, I feel like walking is better. I can definitely feel the difference in my walking.

Thanks to the expertise of her mom’s colleagues, Lainee discovered the root cause of her pain and solutions to correct it. She is now back in school excited to do the activities she loves like cheerleading, gymnastics and fun shopping trips with her friends – entirely pain-free.

“As a parent, it was really nice to have some answers for possible things that were causing her pain,” said Missy. “I see this every day in my job, and to be able to carry that over to my child was so reassuring.”

Three Cheers for Lainee's Recovery
