Breaking Barriers: Aidan’s Journey from Clubfoot to Half Marathons

When Aidan’s parents, Bryan and Lisa, first learned that their unborn son had bilateral clubfoot, they were understandably worried.

Today, thanks to the care he received from the staff at Shriners Children’s Northern California, Aidan is a thriving college student and an active young man.

A Team That Cares for the Whole Family

Aidan began receiving care at Shriners Children’s Northern California when he was just 1 week old in 2003, and his parents knew they were in good hands. Aidan was seen by George Rab, M.D., a skilled and compassionate orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Rab immediately began treating Aidan’s clubfoot with casting, the first step in a comprehensive treatment plan. Over the next few years, Aidan underwent surgery for his clubfoot, including an Achilles tendon procedure at 14 months old. While it was nerve-racking for his parents to see their child go through surgery, they had complete confidence in his Shriners Children’s team.

The Shriners Children’s Northern California staff specializes in treating clubfoot, a condition that affects approximately 1 in every 1,000 newborns. The Shriners Children’s approach combines the Ponseti method – a non-surgical treatment involving gentle manipulation and casting – with surgical interventions when necessary. A team of orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists and casting specialists works together to create personalized treatment plans that ensure the best possible outcomes for patients.

Dr. Rab’s exceptional clinical skills and warm bedside manner put the entire family at ease. He not only cared for Aidan, but also took the time to connect with his parents, even offering travel recommendations for their trips. The family fondly nicknamed him their “travel agent.” Aidan’s care team, including the casting specialists in the Pediatric Orthotic and Prosthetic Services department, made every visit a positive experience. The play area, complete with video games, became a favorite spot for Aidan and his older brothers, who often looked forward to accompanying him to appointments.

A Lifetime of Active Possibilities

Aidan’s treatment continued until he was 18, with regular follow-up visits. His care team took a conservative approach, ensuring Aidan’s gait was as normal as possible with minimal surgeries. While they initially cautioned that Aidan might not excel in sports, he proved them wrong.

When he was 10 years old, Aidan began practicing Tang Soo Do, a Korean martial art, and earned the equivalent of a black belt after 10 years of dedication. Though he eventually stepped away to focus on his social life, his passion for physical activity never waned.

As a teen, Aidan discovered a love for running, starting with short distances alongside his dad. Over time, he progressed to longer races, including a half-marathon. He regularly participates in local races such as the Police Athletic League 5k and runs 8 to 10 miles several times a week with friends.

Now a college student at California State University, Sacramento, Aidan is majoring in electrical engineering. His interest in robotics, which began in middle school, has blossomed into a promising academic and career path.

A Message of Gratitude

Today, Aidan is not only excelling in his studies, but also inspiring others with his determination and resilience. His journey from a child with clubfoot to a college student and avid runner is a powerful reminder of what’s possible with the right care and support. “Thank you – without you, none of what I’ve accomplished would have been possible,” he said.

“We encourage everyone to support Shriners Children’s,” Bryan said. “We found out firsthand what a profound difference they make. The care we received was nothing short of amazing, and we want other families to have the same opportunity.”
