Surrounded by books and a U.S. Air Force shield, donor Bharat Patel, M.D., continues a legacy of service through his support of Shriners Children's and its patients.

Bharat Patel, M.D., and his late wife, Lorene, have dedicated their lives to serving others.

Today, through an extraordinary commitment to Shriners Children’s Lexington, he is honoring Lorene’s memory while helping ensure children receive hope and healing for generations to come.

“Lorene loved volunteering, and she loved the work Shriners Children’s is doing for kids,” Dr. Patel said.

When Lorene passed away in 2021, Dr. Patel was determined to create a lasting tribute to the woman he called his soulmate. Through a planned gift, he has designated Shriners Children’s as the beneficiary of his investments, assets and residential estate.

“It’s what Lorene would have wanted,” he said. “I am doing this in her memory.”

Dr. Patel’s generosity reflects both his lifelong dedication to service and the couple’s deep admiration for the mission of Shriners Children’s. The retired physician said supporting patients at the Lexington medical center and helping children receive The Most Amazing Care Anywhere is especially meaningful because it aligns with the values he and Lorene shared throughout their lives.

Lorene Patel and her husband, Bharat, share a special moment in a family photo. The couple devoted much of their lives to volunteering. Bharat has left all his investments, assets and entire residential estate to Shriners Children’s in his will to honor his late wife.

Born with a passion for helping others, Dr. Patel spent eight years as a surgeon in England before moving to the United States in 1968 to continue his training in cardiovascular surgery. Shortly thereafter, he joined the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant colonel, using his surgical expertise in service to his adopted country. His commitment to caring for others extended beyond his professional responsibilities, including volunteer medical work in Brazil alongside three fellow surgeons.

Service was also at the heart of the Patels’ life together. After retiring to Mooresburg, Tennessee, they dedicated countless hours to helping their community, including delivering meals to older adults living in rural areas.

Today, Dr. Patel still resides in his Tennessee farmhouse, where he enjoys the company of his parrot. His days are filled with reading at the library, volunteering, and pursuing hobbies that include collecting coasters, matchboxes and restaurant menus from his favorite dining spots.

During visits to Shriners Children’s Lexington, he is continually inspired by the care provided to young patients. He is particularly impressed by the medical center’s advanced technology, including an innovative X-ray system that can reduce a child’s radiation exposure by up to 75%.

Dr. Patel’s remarkable gift is a testament to the lasting power of compassion, service and generosity. By honoring Lorene’s memory, he is helping ensure that future generations of children receive the specialized care they need and deserve. Through his support, her spirit of kindness will continue to touch lives for years to come.

Help continue the legacy of kindness inspired by Dr. Patel and Lorene Patel. Make your gift to Shriners Children’s Lexington today.
