All-Star Shriners Children's Staff at Spokane Public Schools Sports Medicine Symposium
Sports medicine students practice casting on Ryan J. Baker, M.D.
From groundbreaking research and discoveries to educating the health professionals of tomorrow, a commitment to education remains a strong piece of Shriners Children’s mission. Recently, Shriners Children’s Spokane medical staff had the opportunity to teach high school students real-world medical skills through the Spokane Public Schools Sports Medicine Regional Symposium.
The goal of this day was to educate local sports medicine high school students about opportunities in healthcare in the Spokane community, showcase opportunities and prepare them for employment or further education in their field. The local symposium is a lead-up to help prepare the students for the statewide sports symposium where high school students will participate in poster presentations, exams and competitions.
Joining other community medical providers, Shriners Children’s Spokane physicians, nurses and athletic trainers spent the morning in workshops with the students and teachers. Staff were involved in a career fair and then led two interactive sessions where students received hands-on experience in the medical field. They were able to learn to cast, try suturing and even draw blood in a simulation environment.
Students enjoyed the opportunity to get hands-on sports medicine experience, and Shriners Children's Spokane staff loved sharing their expertise with the greater Spokane community.
