Shriners Children’s Philadelphia proudly invites current high school juniors, seniors and college students to participate in the Medical Research Summer Immersion Program. This weeklong, all-day research program will train 20 high school and college students in clinical research principles and offer a behind-the-scenes look at daily hospital operations at Shriners Children’s Philadelphia. At the end of the program, participants will present a research idea, demonstrating their understanding and potential contribution to the field of clinical research.
“My favorite part of this program was observing orthopedic surgeons in the operating room. The firsthand experience of witnessing the dynamic nature and behind-the-scenes of operations helped me gain a deeper appreciation of the intellectual and physical demands of surgical specialties,” said a 2025 participant.
Many high school and college students may not have the opportunity to experience a program like this, which teaches clinical research principles while also giving participants the chance to meet and spend time with medical professionals. Engaging high school and college students in research and education fosters community ties and cultivates the next generation of pediatric healthcare innovators. Students who are accepted to participate add to their extracurricular education by exploring what might influence their next chapter and interests outside the classroom.
“I am thrilled to be able to host high school and college students again this summer. This program actively supports and enhances Shriners Children’s mission to changing and improving lives through education, research, and compassionate care to create a brighter future for children's healthcare,” said Amer F. Samdani, M.D., chief of staff.
