Ethics and Research Committee
The Ethics and Research Committee (ERC) is a collegial, autonomous, institutional, interdisciplinary, pluralistic, and consultative body whose main objective is to protect the rights, dignity, and well-being of subjects participating in health research through the evaluation, opinion, and monitoring of research submitted for its consideration. According to the National Guidelines for the Integration and Functioning of Ethics and Research Committees, the IRC has the following objectives:
- To contribute to protecting the dignity, rights, safety, and well-being of all current and potential research participants.
- To act in the interests of participants and the communities involved in the research, and to take into consideration national and international standards on research ethics.
- To ensure that the benefits and burdens of research are distributed among all groups and classes in society, taking into account age, gender, economic status, culture, and ethnic considerations.
The Ethics and Research Committee promotes adherence to ethical principles throughout the research process, from design to publication of results, to ensure the protection of the integrity and rights of Shriners Children's participants, and thus contribute to individual and social well-being.
To be part of the institutional commitment to evaluating the ethical, methodological, and regulatory aspects of research involving human subjects; to guarantee respect for and protection of the dignity, rights, safety, and well-being of all research participants at Shriners Children's.

The functions of the Ethics and Research Committee are as follows:
- To receive, review, evaluate, analyze, and, where appropriate, issue rulings on research protocols involving human subjects that are based on ethical principles in research and in a transparent, unanimous, independent, competent, professional, timely, and unbiased manner.
- To formulate and monitor the ethical recommendations corresponding to research protocols.
- To establish institutional ethical guidelines for research in the health field, in compliance with current regulations.
- To advise researchers on the optimal ethical conduct of their protocols.
- To assist in the application of laws, regulations, and other relevant provisions regarding health research.

Bioethics Committee
Bioethics is a discipline that relates philosophy to the health sciences. From it are derived norms that guide the conduct of health personnel, patients and society in general.
The objective of the Bioethics Committee is to disseminate and safeguard bioethical principles, such as beneficence, non-maleficence, equity and justice; and respect for human life, its dignity and the ecosystem.
The mission of the Bioethics Committee is the study, observance and application of values and principles, aimed at safeguarding the dignity of the person and the preservation of life.
That the Bioethics Committee be a humanistic, collegiate and guiding body in the field of bioethics at Shriners Children's Mexico.

The Bioethics Committee has three main functions:
- Consultative function: This is the fundamental function. It involves resolving bioethical problems in order to contribute to high quality medical care.
- Guiding function: To analyze the processes in medical care to identify areas of opportunity and anticipate conflicts in patient-physician care and suggest solutions
- Educational function: It comprises three senses. First, reviewing documents and providing continuous gradual training. Second, to inform and educate hospital staff through conferences seminars and audiovisual materials. Finally, public awareness – disseminating the role and activities of the committee to the users of medical care in the hospital
Limitations of the Bioethics Committee:
- They do not replace the doctor-patient relationship
- They do not replace the clinical decision-making that corresponds to the physician
- They do not analyze or sanction medical malpractice
- It does not deal with labor, administrative or legal matters
To request the intervention of the Bioethics Committee, fill out the Bioethics Committee Intervention Request Form. The request is reviewed to verify that it corresponds to a bioethical conflict and an ordinary, extraordinary or urgent review date is assigned. According to the assigned date, it is presented to the committee. The bioethical principles that may be threatened are analyzed, problems involved in the medical care are argued, and a solution to the conflict is proposed.
Once the proposal has been made, a recommendation document is issued and delivered to the interested party as well as to the medical or administrative area involved in the case. It is worth mentioning that all members sign a letter of confidentiality with the understanding that the information handled is not disseminated or used for any other purpose than conflict resolution and improvement of the quality of care.
