Interview Tips

To excel in an interview, you should thoroughly research the company and role, practice answering common questions using the STAR method, prepare insightful questions for the interviewer and arrive early with a professional appearance. During the interview you should maintain positive body language, listen attentively, answer concisely, stay positive about past experiences and thank everyone you encounter. After the interview, follow up with the recruiter and/or hiring manager to reiterate your interest and thank them for their consideration.

Suggested steps to follow in preparation for your job interview.
Carefully Examine the Job Description

The job description is a list of the qualifications, qualities and background the employer is looking for in an ideal candidate. The more you can align yourself with these details, the more the employer will be able to see that you are qualified. The job description may also give you ideas about questions the employer may ask throughout the interview.

Consider Why You Are Interviewing and Your Qualifications

Before your interview, you should have a good understanding of why you want the job and why you’re qualified. You should be prepared to explain your interest in the opportunity and why you’re the best person for the role.

Perform Research on the Company and Role

It will help provide context for your interview conversations, but it will also help you when preparing thoughtful questions for your interviewers.

Consider Your Answers to Common Interview Questions

You might also consider developing an elevator pitch that quickly describes who you are, what you do and what you want.

Prepare Thoughtful Questions for the Interviewer

You should take time before the interview to prepare several questions for your interviewer(s) that show you’ve researched the company and are well-versed about the position.

Prepare Your Travel Arrangements

To avoid becoming too anxious for your commute, prepare yourself to ensure everything goes smoothly on the day of the meeting. Here's how:

  • Leave early
  • Save the interview contact information
  • Search the location in advance
Sell Yourself

Most people are uncomfortable with this idea but presenting yourself accurately and positively doesn't have to feel like a sale.

Tips for Phone Interviews
Secure a Quiet Location

Find a private space where you will not be interrupted by people, pets, or background noise. If you're on a mobile device, choose a spot with a strong, stable signal.

Boost Your Energy

Your voice is your only tool for conveying enthusiasm. Stand up during the call to project more energy and be aware of your tone and pace. Smiling can even positively affect how you sound.

Listen Actively

With no visual cues, pay close attention to the interviewer's words. Avoid interrupting and pause briefly after they finish a question to show you're processing the information.

Take concise Notes

Keep a notepad and pen handy to jot down key details. Unlike a video interview, you can reference your notes discreetly without looking away from the camera.

Tips for Video Interviews
Test your Technology

Log in to the Workday interview platform 15–20 minutes early to ensure your audio, video, and internet connection are working properly. Have a backup plan, like a phone number for the interviewer, in case of technical issues.

Create a Professional Background

Choose a clean, uncluttered background. If working from home, sit in front of a blank wall or use a professional virtual background to avoid distractions.

Position Your Camera

Set your camera at eye level so you are looking directly at the interviewer. You can use books to elevate your laptop if needed. Looking at the camera creates virtual "eye contact," which helps you connect with the interviewer.

Ensure Good Lighting

Sit facing a natural light source, like a window. If natural light isn't available, use a lamp in front of you to illuminate your face evenly. Avoid having a bright light source behind you, as this will cast a shadow.

Dress Professionally

Wear professional attire just as you would for an in-person interview. This helps put you in the right mindset and projects a professional image.

Limit Distractions

Close all unnecessary browser tabs and applications on your computer. Put your phone on silent and mute other desktop notifications.
