Sarah Nossov, M.D., is an orthopedic surgeon at Shriners Children's Philadelphia. Dr. Nossov received her undergraduate degree in fine arts and a minor in computer science from Binghamton University. She then enrolled in a post-baccalaureate premedical program at Goucher College. She earned her medical degree as a distinguished scholar at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. In her first week of medical school, she was called to assist at a field hospital in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina due to her emergency medical training. It was there that she worked side by side with volunteer orthopedic surgeons and her interest in bone health began -- within the context of her desire to develop her commitment to community service.

Dr. Nossov completed her residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Michigan Health System, Ann Arbor, prior to her fellowship in pediatric orthopedic surgery at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Her medical education afforded her the privilege to volunteer abroad in resource-limited countries: Guatemala, Burkina Faso and Malawi. In Malawi, she spent a month traveling, consulting and teaching local practitioners.

Working at Shriners Children's allows her to have a practice of equitable distribution of care to both communities that struggle with access to medical care locally like our Pennsylvania Amish and our profoundly affected international patients. Dr. Nossov gets to travel to Shriners Children's outreach clinics in Puerto Rico, throughout Philadelphia and also Fairbanks, Alaska through Shriners Children's Spokane. Working with the Alaskan community is particularly meaningful for her, as much of her family lives there. To celebrate the regional diversity of her patients, she keeps a map of the world of her Shriners Children's patients locations with pins filling up many places and countries.

Shriners Children's draws some of the most complicated, rare and interesting lower extremity deformity cases from around the country and the world. This is perfect for Dr. Nossov because she loves to draw on her training as an artist and seamstress to arrive at creative solutions to lower extremity problems including deformity, arthrogryposis and congenital and acquired foot problems, along with hip diseases like perthes and developmental hip dysplasia. Of course, the everyday problems we see bring her similar satisfaction because educating families and improving their lives is such an important part of her mission.
