Little Fingers, Little Fractures

The Shriners Children’s Doylestown Fracture Clinic has been very busy. With little ones, falls and fractures are almost synonymous this time of year. Recently two local patients came in for treatment due to fractured fingers.

Six-year-old Michelle fractured three of her fingers while jumping off a zip line at a trampoline park. Her pediatrician referred her to the Shriners Children’s Doylestown clinic. At her initial appointment, Michelle was casted and asked to return in four weeks to remove the cast.

Michelle’s mother, Katsiaryna, can’t say enough about her daughter’s experience at the fracture clinic. “We had a really great experience, all the staff were so nice,” she said. “I would definitely recommend this to others and would come back again if need be, but hopefully this will not happen again!”

Nine-year-old Delilah fractured her pinky finger while playing basketball in gym class at school. After school, Delilah’s mother, Jessica, took her to local Urgent Care, who referred them to the Shriners Children’s Doylestown clinic the next day. Also living close by, they came to her initial appointment where she also was casted and asked to return three weeks later.

“Everyone here was super-friendly,” said Delilah’s mother, Jessica. “It was also one of the few places in the area that accepted my insurance.”

Delilah was so excited to receive a good report when she returned for her follow-up appointment. She had been sitting on the bench during recess and gym, and couldn’t wait to get back to playing with her friends and sports again. “I can’t wait to get back to playing softball,” said Delilah.

Both girls were seen by orthopedic surgeon Susan Griffith, D.O. Dr. Griffith has worked at the Shriners Children’s Doylestown Clinic for the past three years. She has seen many sports-related injuries involving fingers. “These two girls having fractured fingers is not uncommon. In fact, most injuries are fractures rather than sprains and strains, which is treated differently than with adult fractures,” she said. “Depending on the fracture, they are often casted to provide proper healing and avoid the possibility of future surgery.”

“I am glad we have the Shriners Children’s Fracture Clinic at Doylestown Health Pavilion," said Dr. Griffith. “It gives better access for patients in Pennsylvania and New Jersey for acute injuries like these fractures, and follow-ups to surgeries with our pediatric orthopedic specialists in this area.”
