Shriners Children’s Philadelphia: Providing the Highest Level Technology in Diagnostic Imaging

The Shriners Children’s Philadelphia radiology department is one of the busiest in the Shriners Children’s healthcare system. Their team provides X-ray imaging for all inpatients and clinic patients, as well as obtaining live imaging in the operating room. Performing over 40,000 images annually, the radiology team also conducts studies from the data they collect from patients seen in the department. Sixty-eight percent of patients who had images collected were receiving spine care, and the other 32% were for lower extremity care, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and other services.

In keeping up with the latest in technology, one of the newest pieces of equipment that the radiology department has acquired are Fuji D-EVO GL panels. These panels offer patients who cannot go into the EOS machine the same dose-reducing process the EOS provides. The Philadelphia Shriners hospital currently has two panels: one for the department and one in the operating room for post-surgical imaging.

“We care for many patients who have conditions that may prevent them from being imaged in the EOS machine,” said Bill Roman, radiology department manager. “It is important that we offer an equal and alternative imaging solution to every patient who comes to Shriners Philly.” The Fuji D-EVO GL panels have also changed imaging capabilities when performing studies on lower extremities, spine and halo-traction patients. For patients who have problems being still, the panels offer the ability to take images instantly, avoiding the movement they might incur during the six-second scan in the EOS.

Another addition to the department is the surgical C-arm X-ray system to assist with some of the less invasive spinal surgeries, such as Vertebral Body Tethering (VBT). The C-arm is used for live X-rays during surgical procedures and is capable of constant view changes.

“Our team members take pride in providing high quality care to every child. We’re always looking for new technology that would improve the care of our patients,” said Roman. The medical teams rely heavily on high quality images to plan the individualized care of each of our patients.
