Dr. Ellen M. Raney of Shriners Children's Receives Distinguished Service Award

A Leader in Care

This prestigious award is presented by the American Academy of Pediatrics

At Shriners Children's, our experienced physicians and staff are committed to providing compassionate, innovative care that improves the quality of life for children and their families. A testament to this mission, Ellen M. Raney, M.D., pediatric orthopedic physician at Shriners Children’s Portland, recently received the Distinguished Service Award, a prestigious honor from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in the Section on Orthopedics (SOOr).

The Distinguished Service Award is bestowed to a former or current SOOr member who, over the course of their career, has provided outstanding leadership and service to SOOr – and of course to the AAP. Excellence in education, patient care, mentoring of younger members, volunteer work and service, research and character are all considered. Dr. Raney is the first woman to receive this award.

“Dr. Raney is a champion for children, a trailblazer and pioneer, a leader for both women and men,” said Yi-Meng Yen, M.D., Ph.D., orthopedic surgeon at Boston’s Children’s Hospital who introduced Dr. Raney at the virtual award ceremony. “The Distinguished Service Award was started in 1995 as a way to recognize the contributions of an AAP member who has excelled in the field of pediatric orthopedics and has contributed to the mission of patient care, research and teaching. She is passionate about pediatrics, child safety, diversity, outreach and education. She is a national leader in all these topics and a great role model.”

A History of Healing

Since 2007, Dr. Raney has served in multiple positions with the American Academy of Pediatrics, most recently serving as Chair of the AAP Section on Orthopedics Advocacy Committee. She served on the board of the executive committee for six years. She chaired the annual meeting presentations and served on the Section on Hospital Management surgical care subcommittee, and others. Dr. Raney has published numerous articles with the AAP on topics as diverse as trampoline injuries, ACL injuries, child abuse and pediatric lower extremity disorders, and she has published books and numerous research articles.

“Dr. Raney is not just a premier pediatric orthopedic surgeon, she also is a leader among our team of surgeons and fellows to improve our pain management program, finding a way around the routine use of opiate medications,” said Martin Klos, M.D., a board member at Shriners Children’s Portland. “Our hospital is a leader in pediatric orthopedics due in no small part to Dr. Raney’s leadership, passion and her comprehensive knowledge in the field of pediatric orthopedic surgery.”|

In 1991, Dr. Raney began her tenure in the Shriners Children’s healthcare system during her fellowship in pediatric orthopedics at Shriners Children’s Florida. Later, she joined the team at Shriners Children’s Honolulu as a pediatric orthopedic surgeon and held positions such as assistant chief of staff and chief of staff during her time there. In 2011, she joined the team at Shriners Children’s Portland. She has spoken internationally and published articles on her subspecialty interests, including cerebral palsy, gait analysis, limb length inequality, clubfoot and hip dysplasia. Much of her work on national committees has been dedicated towards reducing health care disparities and improving access to care in underserved areas.

“Dr. Raney creates meticulous plans of care for patients with cerebral palsy, arthrogryposis and other conditions, considering the functional goals for each child with the expectation to improve function for all of them. She follows the child closely until these goals are met,” said Molly Breslin, physical therapist at Shriners Children’s Portland. “It is a privilege and an honor to work with her.”
