When choosing an orthopedic physician to treat your child's condition, it’s important to remember that kids are not just little adults. Understanding their unique anatomy is critical to ensure that their bones develop and heal properly. Injuries and orthopedic conditions in children, especially those involving growth plates, can cause issues that progress as they grow. Our locations are home to renowned teams of board-certified pediatric orthopedic surgeons devoted to transforming children's lives. For nearly 100 years, Shriners Children's has been paving the way in pediatric orthopedic treatments, rehabilitation and support services.

Common Conditions

Intoeing, flat feet, knock knees and toe-walking are very common in children. Often these conditions resolve on their own, but sometimes further evaluation is required to see if treatment and follow-up is needed. If you have concerns about your child, please have your child evaluated at a Shriners Children's location. Telehealth is a great option for an initial consultation.

Specialties and Conditions

Our patients are at the heart of everything we do. They inspire us to continue our mission of improving the lives of children and families. Our pediatric orthopedic care teams are led by some of the most innovative, board-certified doctors in the world. We specialize in the treatment of complex and rare, as well as more common, orthopedic conditions and injuries. Our compassionate wraparound care envelops your child in a supportive and loving environment that helps them thrive.

Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a broad term that describes a range of neurological (brain) disorders. CP directly impacts coordination, muscle tone and control, posture, reflexes, balance and the ability to move in a purposeful, self-directed way. We provide outstanding specialty care for children with all types of CP, from mild cases that require minimal intervention to more complex diagnoses that necessitate a wider range of support services.

Chest Wall Deformities (Portland only)

We specialize in a variety of common chest wall deformities, from severe cases that are apparent in infancy to mild cases that aren't diagnosed until adolescence. Families should connect with a team of experienced pediatric orthopedic specialists as soon as they notice symptoms or their child’s pediatrician refers them for evaluation.

Clubfoot

Clubfoot (talipes equinovarus) is a common, congenital deformity caused by shortened and tight tissues (tendons) that connect leg muscles to the foot. This affects the positioning of one or both feet and, if left untreated, may affect the ability to walk. With proper intervention and treatment through our superior non-surgical Ponseti method, the foot or feet can be repositioned to an almost normal state, allowing complete freedom to enjoy running, jumping, sports and other routine activities of childhood.

Hip Disorders

Many childhood aspirations are linked to the ability to walk straight and tall, run and move gracefully. Performance depends on how well feet, legs, knees and hips function. The pediatric orthopedic teams at our hospitals address the surgical and non-surgical needs of children so they can achieve their personal best.

Skeletal Dysplasia

Skeletal dysplasia is a broad term used for genetic bone conditions that cause short stature in children. Dwarfism is one of these conditions and can be caused by over 150 disorders where a child’s bones do not grow in the usual way. Our pediatric orthopedic specialists are here to help your child reach their full potential physically, as well as socially and emotionally.

Spine Care/Scoliosis

Our hospitals offer an extensive spinal deformity and scoliosis program. Scoliosis is a musculoskeletal disorder that results in a curved spine. While complex in nature, medical breakthroughs are leading to exciting new treatment options that allow children with this condition to enjoy rich, full lives.

Sports Injuries and Fracture Care

Our pediatric orthopedic surgeons realize there is a need to provide care for kids with fractures and sports injuries in a timely manner. Specialty care may include reduction, re-alignment, surgery, casting, post-fracture follow-up and/or rehabilitative services.

Shriners Children's provides care for a large range of pediatric orthopedic conditions.

Specialty Clinics

Shriners Children's offers are a variety of multidisciplinary specialty clinics for patients who benefit from a collaborative approach to care with multiple medical specialists. Coordinated by our care management team of registered nurses and social workers, our specialty clinics bring together a variety of specialists all in one place. Specialists include pediatric practitioners, geneticists, neurologists; ears, nose and throat doctors; gastroenterologists, orthopedists and developmental pediatric specialists. In addition, social workers, child life specialists; physical, occupational and speech therapists; wheelchair and seating specialists, and orthotics and prosthetic services staff are available.

Current specialty clinics include:

Support Services

We provide children’s medical support services to help patients continue their path to recovery and healing, and to support the child’s growth and development, while helping them be as functional and independent as possible.

Motion Analysis Centers

Our motion analysis centers study and measure patient movement patterns to help guide treatment plans aimed at addressing gait dysfunction.

Pediatric Orthotic and Prosthetic Services (POPS)

Our POPS teams provide care for our patients who have limb deficiencies or bracing needs. From infancy to 18 years of age, the experienced and certified POPS staff provide upper and lower orthotic and prosthetic services, as well as spinal orthotic services, for a wide spectrum of orthopedic conditions, such as congenital and acquired deformities, disease, infection and trauma.

Rehabilitation Services

Our physical, occupational and speech therapists create individualized plans of care for each patient. Physical therapists help patients regain function, maintain function or make accommodations for any deficits they may be experiencing. Occupational therapists help patients regain or assist them with fine motor skills and activities linked with daily living. The ultimate goal is to help children prepare for the transition away from the hospital and back to home or school.

Speech language pathologists focus on the core areas of speech and language with a goal of understanding each patient’s needs and helping them achieve functional communication skills.

Radiology

Our on-site radiology departments are a key component for diagnosis, treatment planning and surgical correction. Radiology services offer a child-friendly environment and a team of technologists who are skilled in making pediatric patients comfortable. Along with traditional X-rays, we also utilize EOS 2D/3D imaging technology which captures whole-body images using only 1/9 of the radiation of a traditional X-ray. Additionally, Shriners Children's Portland utilizes an O-arm in surgical settings, which provides high image quality and can help decrease the time the patient needs to spend in surgery because of its efficiencies.

Wheelchair, Seating & Mobility

The wheelchair, seating and mobility program at Shriners Children's Salt Lake City is an in-house custom seating clinic available to all patients with seating needs. Our highly skilled staff – comprised of practitioners, technicians and volunteers – with a cumulative 85 years of experience in physical and occupational therapy and mechanical engineering, provide customized wheelchair services for each child. After a medical evaluation by one of our orthopedic physicians in the outpatient clinic at the Salt Lake City Shriners Children's, patients may choose to receive services at our wheelchair and seating department. Utilizing high-tech tools such as seat simulation services and extensive pressure mapping, as well as innovative and hands on adjustments, we work with each family to ensure every child is reaching their potential.
