Bennett's Big Smiles and Big Dreams

Bennett has a smile for everyone.

Bennett has never met a stranger.

This sociable kindergartener from South Carolina is quick to tell you all about his favorite things: Spider-Man, football, dinosaurs, his pet lizard and waffles. He loves making people laugh, and he strikes up conversations with just about anyone he meets. That outgoing personality has become a hallmark of a child whose resilience continues to inspire everyone around him.

Bennett was just 3 years old when a tragic incident left him with burn injuries covering approximately 90% of his body. Since then, he has undergone a long and intensive recovery journey that has included surgeries and ongoing therapy. Bennett’s initial treatment took place in Georgia, and after his original doctor was no longer available, his family transferred his care to Shriners Children's Texas, where he now receives specialized reconstructive and rehabilitative burn care.

The transition brought understandable uncertainty because Bennett and his family had spent significant time with a medical team they knew and trusted. Starting over with new providers felt a little intimidating at first. It didn't take long, however, for Shriners Children's Texas to feel like home. From the physicians and therapists to the nursing staff and support teams, Bennett and his mother, Chelsea, quickly built connections throughout the hospital. Chelsea said one of the biggest differences has been the relationships formed along the way.

"Everybody knows him," Chelsea said. "Everywhere we go, people know Bennett."

Those relationships are especially evident during occupational therapy sessions. Bennett talks enthusiastically about the therapists he works with and is often eager to see them during his visits. Whether he's learning new skills or celebrating another milestone, he approaches therapy with the same enthusiasm he brings to everything else.

“Bennett is a true testament to strength and resilience,” said Emma Ogunda, FNP, nurse practitioner for burn care at Shriners Children’s Texas. “He has made tremendous progress and continues to amaze us all.”

Bennett's treatment focuses on helping him improve mobility and function so he can continue doing all the things a young child loves to do. Chelsea said one of the most remarkable parts of the journey has been watching how naturally he adapts to challenges. Bennett approaches life with curiosity and creativity, born out of a willingness to try new things.

For his family, Shriners Children's Texas has provided more than medical care. It has offered support, encouragement and hope during one of the most difficult chapters of their lives. Through every milestone, big or small, Bennett continues to show the world what courage can be. Sometimes that courage looks like a 5-year-old who always greets the world with a smile.

A Spirit that Brightens Every Room
