Lauren Hyer, M.D., joined Shriners Children’s Greenville in 2016, and has become a trusted leader in the fields of arthrogryposis, cerebral palsy, clubfoot, limb deficiency and injury care. She is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and is an active member of the AAOS, POSNA, AACPDM and ACPOC.

From Florida, Dr. Hyer attended Stetson University, where she played collegiate volleyball before earning her medical degree from the University of South Florida. She completed her residency in Greenville with what is now Prisma Health, followed by a fellowship at Phoenix Children’s in Arizona.

Dr. Hyer has built a multidisciplinary program at Shriners Children’s Greenville for children diagnosed with arthrogryposis, which is composed primarily of physical and occupational therapy, orthotics and orthopedic surgery. She has been an invited speaker at local and national meetings, and has published numerous papers, including a landmark article on growth charts for children with arthrogryposis. She considers herself fortunate to be able to care for patients with this condition from across the United States and around the world.

In addition, she is one of two physicians who run the motion analysis center, or “gait lab” – one of the most active motion centers in the Southeast. Here, she uses 3D models to analyze the way a child walks to develop a specialized treatment plan unique to that patient. The plan helps her provide the best care for ambulatory patients with cerebral palsy, arthrogryposis or clubfoot, or any child who walks differently. She and her colleagues are active researchers and have published multiple articles on how this technology enhances care.

Dr. Hyer prioritizes creating a meaningful doctor/patient relationship. She believes that she is not just treating a child in need, but an entire family. She is grateful to practice at a place like Shriners Children’s Greenville, where she can partner seamlessly with therapy, orthotics, and motion analysis to provide the highest quality of care for each patient, regardless of a family’s ability to pay or insurance status.

Outside of work, Dr. Hyer enjoys spending time with her husband and two young boys. Together they enjoy doing anything outside and active. An avid runner and cyclist, Dr. Hyer has completed the Boston Marathon four times and once rode her bike across the country to raise money for Shriners Children’s.
