Dr. Ramon L. Zapata-Sirvent, Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon:

I'm Dr. Ramon Zapata. I'm a plastic surgeon here at Shiners Children, Texas. I born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela. I was interested in burn reconstruction very early in my life. I was motivated by the injury that fire induced in the oil workers. I got my first training in Denver where I saw a lot about burn patients. So how important is the reconstruction, and if that begin early, it can achieve many goals like preventing any functional alteration and improve the scars.

Here at Shriners, we start the reconstruction very early. In some cases, six months after the injury, we start with lasers and also we start with releasing many of the contractures that these patients have. The goal is to achieve happy patient with the less functional alteration and with a nice scar.

The burns are forever, scars will not disappear with time, it will improve and our goal is to have a pretty happy patient. We need to bring the smile again to this patient and with the less functional alteration and with a very good scar.
