For more than 25 years, the Shriners Children’s Boston plastics team has been a leader in advancing the use of lasers to minimize scarring from burns. Lasers reduce hospital stays, limit the need for surgery, and support better long‑term outcomes for children, including quality of life.
Laser therapy has helped Wyatte feel more comfortable in his own skin. “He doesn’t feel as tight or itchy. This gives him the ability to feel well enough to play sports,” said Courtnie.
That renewed comfort and confidence have helped Wyatte embrace the activities he loves, including karate and baseball. “Wyatte loves going to Red Sox games at Fenway Park. He eventually wants to meet Wally, and he would love to meet David Ortiz as well,” said Courtnie. “He also enjoys swimming, fishing, riding bikes and playing video games.”
Reflecting on how far Wyatte has come, Courtnie hopes their story can offer reassurance to other families facing similar challenges. “I don’t want anyone else to feel so alone. I was unsure who to turn to when Wyatte was burned,” she said. “It was helpful to read others' stories and know there's a light at the end of the tunnel when nothing feels okay.”
Courtnie is forever grateful for the staff members who have supported her son through every phase of treatment. “The amount of support, love and care Shriners Children’s Boston has shown over the years is unbelievable,” Courtnie said. “It's the feeling that Wyatte is not just another child. He matters, his time matters. The best thing is when the drives are long and he gets excited to see the staff who saved him wholeheartedly.”
