Team Shriners Raises Thousands, Gives Back in the Chicago Marathon

Team Shriners is smiles before the Chicago Marathon.
More than 30 runners supported the pediatric specialty care of Shriners Children's in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.
Some participants were patients themselves or members of Shriners International. Others ran on behalf of patients and families whose lives have been impacted by the care provided at Shriners Children’s locations across the country.
Among the runners was Conor from Chicago, who sought a way to make his first Chicago Marathon meaningful by securing an entry running for a charity. That search led him to Shriners Children’s Chicago, with help from his girlfriend, Mary, a former patient.
“I had a wonderful experience at Shriners Children's. Dr. Smith and his team were incredibly supportive during my scoliosis surgery,” Mary said about the treatment for scoliosis with Peter Smith, M.D. "My care at Shriners Children's was a huge part of my childhood and gave me strength that I still carry.”
For Mary, seeing Conor run for the organization that shaped her childhood was a meaningful moment. "I always hoped I'd be able to give back someday," she said. "Seeing him do this is incredibly special."
As Conor trained and raised funds for the race, family and friends supported him, eager to contribute to an organization that provides care for children facing complex medical journeys.
“Mary’s story and the mission of Shriners Children’s are so inspiring,” Conor said. “It means a lot to run for a hospital that has helped so many kids and had such a positive impact on someone I love.” Conor also happened to be born with a cleft lip and palate, another condition the Chicago location specializes in treating.
While each Team Shriners runner arrived at the start line with a different story, they shared a common goal: honoring the lasting impact of Shriners Children’s and supporting the next generation of patients.
The 2026 team has already been selected and is preparing for the fall 2026 marathon to support the mission of changing children’s lives through advanced specialty care.
