Resilience in Every Spine: Higgy Con 2025
Shriners Children's patient Chloe with Higgy Bears founder Lauren Higginson.
Patients, families and staff from Shriners Children’s recently came together in Hurst, Texas, for Higgy Con – the world’s largest gathering of patients with scoliosis. For the third consecutive year, Shriners Children’s proudly sponsored this annual conference, which offers support, education and connection for young people living with scoliosis.
Scoliosis can present both physical and emotional challenges for children and teens. Higgy Con provides a unique and uplifting space where they can meet others who truly understand what they’re going through. Over three days, participants engage in various activities such as a fashion show, crafts and a dance party. Families also had the opportunity to connect directly with staff members from Shriners Children’s Chicago and Shriners Children’s Philadelphia, learning about the specialized spine care available at locations around the world.
While the kids bonded through shared experiences, parents attended several educational talks and panel discussions. Among the speakers was physician Amer F. Samdani, M.D., who is a pediatric orthopedic spine surgeon and chief of staff at Shriners Children's Philadelphia.
Dr. Samdani’s talk covered vertebral body tethering and fusion surgical options. Spine nurse Linda Cree, RN, also played a key role throughout the weekend, leading multiple support group sessions and offering families valuable information and heartfelt encouragement.
Higgy Con was not just informative – it was transformative. Many left the event with new knowledge, renewed hope and friendships that will last a lifetime.
