A Story of Strength and Hope: Mackenna’s Journey at Shriners Hospitals for Children Canada

For Mackenna, age 10, growing up meant facing more challenges than most.

Born with hypochondroplasia – a form of dwarfism that affects bone growth – she struggled with bowed legs, restricted mobility and chronic discomfort. Despite her condition, Mackenna was a vibrant, energetic child who loved cheerleading and gymnastics. But running, walking and keeping up with friends became increasingly difficult.

Her mother, Jennifer, knew something had to change.

“Mackenna is brave, determined and full of life,” said Jennifer. “I wanted her to grow up knowing that her future had no limits.”

That future began to take shape in Montreal, where the family traveled from Winnipeg to receive care at Shriners Hospitals for Children Canada. Jennifer, who had undergone similar treatment at the same hospital as a child, knew her daughter would be in good hands.

Over a span of three months, Mackenna underwent complex limb-lengthening surgery. Through an external fixator device, her bones were gradually extended by two millimeters per day – a painstaking but effective process that added 10 centimeters in height and realigned her legs. She attended physical therapy three to five times a week and faced every session with courage.

“It wasn’t easy,” said Jennifer. “But she met every obstacle with strength and a smile.”

Shriners isn’t just a hospital – it’s a family.

What made the biggest difference, according to Jennifer, was the support provided by Shriners Hospitals for Children Canada. All travel costs, accommodations, meals, medical equipment and transportation were covered.

“We didn’t pay a cent,” she said. “It’s because of the generosity of donors that I was able to take a leave from work and be there with her every step of the way.”

Today, Mackenna is thriving. She’s dancing, tumbling and shopping for clothes with her friends – little things that mean the world to a 10-year-old. One day, she dreams of becoming a physical therapist, inspired by Gabby, her dedicated therapist who made her smile even on the hardest days.

“The staff cared about how I was doing, not just Mackenna,” said Jennifer. “They played with her, brought her activity kits, and always asked how we were feeling. In a difficult, isolating time, that meant everything.”

Mackenna’s story is a testament to the power of hope, resilience and compassionate care – and to the life-changing difference that donors make every day.
