Dominic’s story is one of resilience, hope and an unyielding spirit.
Born with a rare genetic condition that went undetected at birth, Dominic’s journey with Shriners Children’s Northern California began when he was just a baby.
What started as a concern for clubfoot – a condition where the foot is twisted out of shape or position – soon revealed a much more complex medical reality. After his father, Joe, voiced concerns and an X-ray was taken, Dominic was found to have a broken femur, possibly due to a traumatic birth via cesarean section. At just 6 weeks old, Dominic had broken every bone in his body, leading to his transfer to Shriners Children’s Northern California. This marked the beginning of a 10-year journey with Shriners Children’s, where Dominic has received life-changing care and support.
A Rare Diagnosis: Osteogenesis Imperfecta and Brucks Syndrome
Dominic was diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a rare disease that causes bones to break easily, often from little or no trauma. OI is caused by a genetic defect that affects the body’s ability to produce strong collagen, a key protein in bones. In addition to OI, Dominic has Brucks syndrome, an extremely rare condition with only 48 documented cases in the United States. Brucks syndrome causes joint contractures, where the joints become permanently fixed in a bent or straightened position, limiting movement. Dominic’s dual diagnosis made him one of the second known cases in the U.S. with both conditions, highlighting the rarity and complexity of his medical needs.
A Life of Challenges and Silver Linings
Daily life for Dominic comes with significant challenges. He is unable to walk and relies on a wheelchair for mobility, which can be frustrating for an active, outdoorsy child who loves sports. Simple tasks like brushing his teeth, using the bathroom or getting into the bathtub require assistance. Yet Dominic’s indomitable spirit shines through. He always finds the silver lining and figures out creative ways to adapt. His love for the outdoors and determination to live life to the fullest inspire everyone around him.
A Decade of Care at Shriners Children’s Northern California
Dominic’s care has been led by a specialized team at Shriners Children’s Northern California, including Joel Lerman, M.D., Rolando Roberto, M.D., and Holly Leshikar, M.D. Over the years, he has undergone numerous surgeries, including fracture repairs and spinal procedures. His first major surgery took place before his second birthday, and this year he is scheduled for his seventh. Minor surgeries, however, are too many to count, according to his mom, Lucy.
One of the most memorable moments in his journey was at 6 years old, when he sustained a spine and neck injury. After being transported to UC Davis for a halo device – a circular brace attached to the skull to stabilize the neck – he returned to Shriners Children’s for continued care.
Home Away from Home
For Dominic and his family, Shriners Children’s Northern California has become a second home. During extended stays, which sometimes last up to six weeks, the hospital’s compassionate staff and unique programs have made all the difference. Dominic loves the second floor’s play area, where he participates in sessions with music therapist Ronnie, whom Lucy describes as “amazing.” Whether playing the ukulele, drums or xylophone, music therapy has been a source of joy and healing for Dominic. He also looked forward to pet therapy, where he bonded with service dog Pogo, who provided comfort and companionship in between medical appointments.
The hospital staff's efforts to create a welcoming environment extend beyond medical care. During holidays like Halloween and birthdays, the staff ensures that Dominic and other patients feel celebrated, even when they’re far from home. The cafeteria staff even knows Dominic’s preferences – like his dislike for soup – and goes out of their way to make him feel special.
A Natural-Born Inspirer
Dominic’s charisma and compassion have made him a beacon of hope for other patients. During the pandemic, he worked with Shriners Children’s Northern California’s marketing team to create a video for donors, showcasing his natural talent for connecting with people. His parents believe he was put on this earth to inspire others, and Dominic lives up to that calling every day. He often encourages other children before their surgeries, sharing his own experiences to ease their fears.
Dominic’s dream is to one day be on TV or have his own YouTube channel. He’s even brainstorming ideas for a special teddy bear design to comfort kids in the hospital. His compassion extends beyond the hospital walls: Last Christmas, he helped donate over 1,500 toys to patients at the hospital during the Rally4Kids EuroSunday toy drive, and is determined to surpass that number this year.
A Supportive Family and a Bright Future
Dominic’s journey is made easier by the unwavering support of his family. His two older sisters, 18 and 20, are his biggest cheerleaders, always including him in their activities and helping with his daily needs. Dominic’s 10th birthday marked a huge milestone for him and his family, and his parents took the time to reflect on everything he’s overcome in the past decade.
“It’s crazy to think of everything he’s been through in 10 years,” Lucy said.
Dominic’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, the importance of specialized care and the impact of a supportive community. Through his journey at Shriners Children’s Northern California, Dominic continues to inspire everyone he meets, proving that even in the face of immense challenges, there is always hope and a reason to smile.
