New Burn Outpatient Clinic Opens in Charleston

Leslie D. Stewart, M.D., President of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Shriners Children’s, cuts the red ribbon at the ceremonial opening of Shriners Children's Charleston as patients, staff and Shriner leaders look on.
With great anticipation swirling around the impending opening of the fifth American Burn Association-verified pediatric burn care location in the Shriners Children’s healthcare system, a ceremonial ribbon-cutting took place at the new Shriners Children’s Charleston outpatient burn clinic on August 4, 2026.
The expansion of pediatric burn care, which will serve children in South Carolina, is the culmination of years of planning between Shriners Children’s and MUSC Health.
“It’s a door no family ever hopes they will need [to walk through], but if that day comes, they deserve to know that extraordinary pediatric burn care specialists are here,” Leslie Stewart, M.D., chairman, Shriners Children’s Board of Trustees, said to the standing room-only audience in the lobby of the new facility.
Following the ceremony, patient families, Shriners and reporters joined staff in touring the new clinic, which will provide a continuum of care for patients, many of whom were previously hospitalized with moderate to life-threatening injuries.
“It will allow us to perform the highest quality of outpatient care,” Steven Khan, M.D., Shriners Children’s Charleston physician and chief of burn surgery at MUSC, told reporters. “A burn injury doesn’t stop when someone leaves the hospital. It’s our job to get people back to their pre-injury life.”
Shriners Children’s Charleston consists of five exam rooms plus a rehabilitation gym.
