Vishwas R. Talwalkar, M.D., chief of staff, Shriners Children’s Lexington, and Chief of Pediatric Orthopaedics, University of Kentucky Healthcare, has been elected to the position of director-elect of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS).

The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Inc. was founded in 1934 as a private, voluntary, nonprofit, independent organization to serve the best interests of the public and the medical profession. These interests are achieved through the ABOS by establishing standards for the education of orthopedic surgeons. These standards are evaluated by the ABOS through examinations and practice evaluations.

“It’s a great honor and responsibility to serve on the board of directors for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery,” Talwalkar said. “The ABOS celebrates its 90th birthday this year. It is an independent organization that works with other groups to guide the education and certification of orthopedic surgeons throughout their careers. It serves a vital role in our society to protect the public and promote the safe, competent and ethical practice of orthopedic surgery. I am very grateful for this amazing opportunity.”

Dr. Talwalkar brings a great deal of expertise with him that will benefit the ABOS, our profession and our patients. The board received an impressive slate of candidates and selected a leader in pediatric orthopedic surgery.

Dr. Talwalkar specializes in pediatric orthopedic surgery. In addition to being a busy surgeon, he is a prolific researcher and is regularly invited to write book chapters. This summer, Dr. Talwalkar served as an ABOS oral examiner for the fifth consecutive year. He earned his M.D. from Washington University School of Medicine, completed residency training at Vanderbilt University, and obtained a pediatric orthopedic fellowship from Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.

The ABOS board of directors consists of 21 members, which includes 12 active directors, six senior directors, two directors-elect, and one public member director. ABOS board members serve one 10-year term while the public member director serves a three-year renewable term. Nominations to the ABOS board of directors come from the American Orthopaedic Association, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Medical Association.
