The History of Shriners Children’s Mexico

Established on: Saturday, March 10, 1945

Shriners Children’s Mexico was established in March 1945 in Mexico Children's Hospital, with a room that included 10 beds. Since its foundation, thousands of patients have benefited from the clinical and surgical treatments it offers. The facility was founded thanks to the initiative of the Anezeh club, and in particular one of its members, Mr. D'Acosta, who took the initiative to start this amazing project and help Mexican children.

Shriners Children's Mexico currently has more than 25,000 active patients.

Location Highlights

  • 1945: opening of facilities within the Mexico Children's Hospital.
  • 1949: a house was bought in the south of the city that was used for caring hospice patients.
  • 1961: a second location was built in Mexico, on Árbol del Fuego and Suchil streets, with 60 beds, two operating rooms, a Department of Physical Therapy, Orthotics and related services.
  • 2006: The new Shriners Children’s Mexico opened their facilities on Av. del Imán No. 257, with 80 beds, four operating rooms, prosthesis and orthosis manufacturing workshop, as well as Departments of Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and other services.

Until now, the hospital has not only contributed to improving the quality of life for children in Mexico and Central America, but has also contributed to the training of physicians through its subspecialty program in pediatric orthotists.

This program has trained dozens of physicians in this specialty for almost 40 years. Many of the physicians who were initially residents are now part of our staff, some with more than 30 years of service.

Currently, the Mexico Children’s Hospital seeks to expand its borders of care and reach other states of the country with the most amazing care anywhere. An example is the future opening of a clinic in the city of Monterrey, where patients from northeastern Mexico will be treated.
