Meet Nhi

Nhi at work as a nurse

Condition: Severe Burn Injuries

Can you share a little bit about your history as a patient at Shriners?

I was treated for burn care at the Shriners in Boston for two years before my family moved to Sacramento. Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California was the most stable part of my life as a child. We moved a lot, but I was a regular patient for 11 years.

What made you apply for a job at our Shriners Hospital in Sacramento?

I was volunteering in the surgery department and then this job as a Nursing Assistant opened up. I am a student at UC Davis, and my goal is to become a Nurse Practitioner. I would love to come back and work at Shriners. It would be nice to give back to the hospital for everything they did for my family. When people do nice things for you, you wish it could pay it forward.

You mentioned you would like to work with burn patients. Can you tell us why?

Being a burn survivor, I understand burn care. Because the treatment is so familiar to me, I think it is very helpful to be the person to provide the treatment to the patients. I think it resonates with the patients and their families when I say, “This isn’t the end. You will get out.” I want to tell them about why they should attend the amazing burn camp and help them look forward to making plans.

How is it being back at Shriners as an employee?

It is nice to catch up with the employees that I knew when I was here as a patient. It is nice to be part of the team. Shriners Hospital is a very special place for me.
