Even before high school, Thomas Mason, M.D., thought he would become a pediatrician. He went to medical school in his home state of West Virginia, and completed an internal medicine-pediatrics residency there as well. It was at that point, he chose a career in rheumatology and did a combined fellowship in adult and pediatric rheumatology at UNC Chapel Hill.

Dr. Mason felt fortunate to be picked by Mayo Clinic after his fellowship. One of his mentors there, Audrey Nelson, M.D., was instrumental in starting the JRA Clinic at Shriners Children's and she encouraged him to participate. He was happy to join Shriners Children's in 1993 and has been attending here ever since.
