More than 50 nurses and other health care professionals gathered at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California for a Pediatric Wound Care Boot Camp on Wednesday, Dec. 4. The continuing education course was presented by Shriners Hospitals for Children in partnership with the wound care team at UC Davis Children’s Hospital.
“This was an opportunity for nurses caring for the pediatric population to discuss best practices in a positive, collaborative setting,” said event co-organizer Holly Kirkland-Kyhn, a nurse practitioner at UC Davis Health. Robyn Bartlett, manager of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Shriners Hospital said, “Our nurses treat wounds of all shapes and sizes and this course promoted collaboration and best practices, which ultimately benefit the kids we serve.”
The course included both didactic and hands-on instruction as well as vendor demonstrations. Shriners Hospital and UC Davis professionals lectured on a variety of topics, which included Implications for Fetal Surgery, Pediatric Wounds, Minor Burn Care and Reconstruction. Among the nurses presenting were Holly Kirkland-Kyhn, Robyn Bartlett, Amy Powne, Christa Bedford Mu, Bo Vang-Yang, and Cherie Saunders. Pirko Maguina, M.D., a plastic surgeon at Shriners Hospital and UC Davis Health, gave a talk on reconstruction.
Vendor demonstrations took place during the lunch hour. Participants included Active Life Healthcare, Coloplast Corp., Medline, Appulse Medical, EHOB Inc., Acelity (3M+KCI), and Sacramento Wound Care.
