“As a perioperative nurse Kelsey provides surgical patient care by assessing, planning, and implementing the nursing care patients receive before, during and after surgery. These activities include creating and maintaining a sterile and safe surgical environment, monitoring the patient’s physical and emotional well-being and caring for the patient before and after surgery,” says Lana Woods, manager of perioperative services at the Northern California Shriners Hospital. Perioperative nurses are required to work with surgical patients, family members and other health care professionals, Woods notes.

Ms. James joined the hospital’s patient care team in September 2015. Her co-worker Ryan Antiquera, R.N., nominated her for DAISY Award. In his nomination, Antiquera wrote: “Kelsey has gone above and beyond to support her teammates by coming in to support and relieve them during long cases. I have seen her care and attention to patients who are at their most anxious when they are being moved to the operating room and she steps in with a kind word and calm reassurance to help them along their path to healing. She genuinely engages with each patient under her care, acknowledging their individuality and unique personal needs. She brings compassion and a real sense of warmth to her interactions with patients and their families.”

About the DAISY Award

DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. It is the name of a foundation established by a family in memory of their son, Patrick Barnes, who died of an immune system disease. The DAISY Award was established to recognize the compassionate care Patrick received during his illness. More than 500 health care organizations are committed to honoring their nurses with the DAISY Award, which is presented in collaboration with the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) and supported by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANNCC) Magnet Recognition Program.
