Northern California Shriners Hospital Represented in New National Photo Exhibit

Formerly conjoined twins posing with their walkers

A photograph taken by Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California photographer Julia Serat was selected for inclusion in the biennial Children’s Hospitals Photo Exhibit—the result of a national competition administered by the Children’s Hospital Association (CHA).

The winning photo is of formerly conjoined twins, Eva and Erika Sandoval working with physical therapists Kelly Sattler-Petrocchi and Laura van Houtryve.

“What caught my eye when taking this photograph is the lively engagement between the therapists and their patients, the Sandoval twins. The therapists know the value of incorporating fun and play into functional activities, and in this photo they were laughing heartily with the twins as they were attempting to catch a toy football that teetered out of sight. While capturing patient moments is usually the goal, watching the therapists experience joy, while helping children master their environment under challenging circumstances, is also a moment to preserve, capture, and a story to tell,” said Serat.

The new exhibit of 50 winning photographs was curated by a panel of distinguished judges, including renowned photographer and author Anne Geddes. Showcasing the ways children’s hospitals help all children thrive, the online exhibit includes stories behind the photos, allowing viewers to read first-hand accounts from patients, parents, doctors and other health care providers.

Serat’s photo was selected from more than 370 images submitted by nearly 60 children’s hospitals. Joining Geddes on the judging panel were Sandy Adams, photo journalist and officer, The Exposure Group; Lily Francesca Alt, photo director, PARENTS magazine; Lori Epstein. photo director, National Geographic Kids Books; and Eric Gapsch, graphic designer, CHA.
